Family from Another country

My family is from Japan. In order to prepare for this culturally different family i would implement the following .
1. I would do research on the culture of Japan especially on how children are raised.
2.  I would prepare questions in the family's language. Such questions as what are their goals for their child.
3. I would place Japanse words on items within the room. I would learn the Japanes word for people and places within the school. ( such as library and principal)
4. I would gather some Japanese books for the room . I would read these to the  children already in the class to  get them familiar and interested in our new classmate. These books would also help the student.
5. I would plan a day where the parents could come to school and demonstrate a game or a food dish from Japan.
I  think that by implementing this  5 things, I the child and the family would create a professional and friendly bond.  I also think that these 5 ways would make the studnet and family fell apart of the  classroom family.

  2. Hi Joy,
I love your ideas. I think that all children should be taught about other cultures. I think it is great tha you want the parents to come in and demonstrate one of their traditional dishes or a traditional game. I feel by adding cultural studies to the curriculum you are teaching your class that is okay to be different and that people do come from different ethnic backgrounds. You are also teaching them that in addition to learning from the teacher they can also learn from each other.

  3. Hey Joy!

I love your ideas...I have some that are similar. My favorite is incorporating the parents into the day by allowing them to demonstrate some Japanese dishes. I think this not only makes the child proud of their culture it makes the parents feel more comfortable with you when they see how interested you are in their culture. Great post!

  4. Great ideas!!!!! By implementing your program for the student is essential. Both parents and the child would feel safe in your classroom, because you’re building a foundation to make that child feel at home.

  5. Japan is a wonderful country for children to learn more about and by providing all of the ways that you mention to help the Japanese family to feel a part, it will also help the other children to learn about Japan. They have wonderful clothing and adding those items to the dramatic play area would give the children a real enjoyment.
