Microaggression

According to Dr. Sue microaggression is a verbal behavior thar has a hidden message about a culutre. I feel that sometimes people within our own culture show microagression toward peoplewithin thier own culture. An example happened to me. I attend a small country church and many  of the membersa are older who have retired. One Sunday someone drove up in a new car and an older gentleman  and I were outside after church. He saw the new car and asked if that was my new car. I replied no and he said "Oh I thought you might have cuaght up with the rest of us."  I felt like because I  did not have a new car that I was not part of the church or a menber of the culture within the church. I was amazed and shocked that he had said this.
I think that even within a culutre microaggression goes on and we should be more careful about how we act and what we say.

  1. Joy-- I hate to hear that happened. People can be so rude at times. The video with Dr Sue from this week really made me think about how people say things and don't really understand the implications or the hurt that it may cause. Sorry you had to deal with such an unwelcoming experience.

  2. Hi Joy,
It is sad when people are rude and it is sad when people do not think about what they are going to say before speaking. I know my husband and I are of two diffrent religions (he is Mormon and I am Catholic) and in our area everyone around us is Mormon. Many times our neighbors will not help us out or associate with us because my husband did not marry in his own faith. It hurts us as well because we feel like outcasts.

  3. Joy I am sure that the older gentleman didn't realize that he had put you in a "catch-22" dilemma in your response. I think that our senior citizens don't always realize what they say can cause a psycological affect on somewhat because we respect them. Just know that you are blessed no matter what you drive.
