Define culture and diversity

I asked Mrs. Clark who is  a special edcuation educator and she defined culture as everything that makes up a person. Diversity  as the difference between the things (characteristics) of  cultures.
Mrs. Fulton who is a  friend defined culture as a persons traditions. Diversity as a person's race.
Toby who is my husband defined culture as race and diversity as different  in people.
I believe that the three people had varing opions of what culture or diversity means. I believe that Mrs. clark defined the terms that anyone could understand. When Mrs. Clark stated the difference in characteristics, I think she knew that everyone is different in many ways.   I think what has been omitted in Mrs. Fulton's definitions would be the broad attachment that is emcompassed in diversity.
I think that the three people are on the right track in their defintion . However, I wonder if Toby and Mrs. Fulton understand that there are many characteristics to take into account when discussing culture and diversity?

  1. Great post Joy! I noticed a difference in your responses with the educator in comparison to the other 2. Of my 3 responses 1 of them is an educator too and I noticed a difference in her response. I guess educators are more aware of diversity and culture than I thought. I wonder if it would be beneficial to offer a training specific to this for every 4 year of teaching or working with children...hmmm....

  3. Great post Joy. I had also noticed that there was a difference in the way that the people you interviewed had responded. I had interviewed one of my aunt's who is a preschool teacher at a Catholic Preschool and she seemed to know a lot about culture and also described how diversity and culture are taught in the classroom. I had also interviewed a friend of mine who is of Indian Descent (her ancestors come from the country of India) and she had a very different look on this issue.
I had also learned a lot about culture.

  4. Joy I think your three people answers were similar to most people who are asked the question about culture and diversity. I am sure that they thought more about it after your discussion and will want to learn more about the subject. I guess diversity can also be found in how each of our three interviewees perceive what diversity is based on their experience.
